Cold water is the other half of a visit here. After a round in the very hot sauna, most guests shower and lower themselves into the ice bath or a plunge pool. The sharp shock of the cold, then the warm, tingling glow once you climb out, is what brings a lot of people back for a second round.

There are two ways to go cold. The ice bath is a tub of water and ice with a step beside it and a lid that keeps the ice from melting between guests. The cold plunge pools are the other option. If you are not sure which suits you, ask the staff which is coldest on the day and start with a short dip.

The ice bath fits neatly after training too: you can cool down after training without leaving the site. Entry is on a day pass or a membership, and today's times and directions are on how to find us.

The ice bath

The ice bath is a blue tub filled with cold water and floating ice, with a slatted step to climb in and out and a digital thermometer fitted to it. The house limit is 10 minutes per round, as the sign beside it says, and guests are asked to close the lid properly afterwards so the ice lasts for the next person.

Get in slowly, keep your breathing long and calm, and get out if you start to shiver hard or your hands and feet go numb. A minute or two is plenty the first time, well inside the house limit.

Plunge pools

Next to the ice bath there are cold plunge pools: another way into the cold, and a quick reset between hot rounds. Shower before you get in, enter feet first rather than jumping, and keep each dip short until you know how your body reacts. Switching between the plunge pools and the ice bath on the same visit is fine, as long as every round stays short.

Contrast therapy: alternating heat and cold

Contrast therapy means moving between heat and cold. Here that means a round in the sauna or steam room, a cold shower, a short dip in the ice bath or a plunge pool, then a rest before you start again. Two to four rounds is a common pattern, and you can finish on whichever feels better to you.

The research is modest. A 2013 systematic review in PLOS ONE found that alternating hot and cold water eased muscle soreness after exercise compared with simply resting, but did no better than other recovery methods such as cold water alone or compression. So treat contrast therapy as a routine that feels good; it is no substitute for medical care. Our guide to sauna and ice bath covers the order, timing and number of rounds in more detail.

Who should skip the ice bath

Cold water makes you gasp and pushes up your heart rate and blood pressure within seconds; the UK Met Office describes this cold water shock as typically lasting around 90 seconds. If you have a heart or blood pressure condition, are pregnant or have problems with your circulation, check with your doctor before you use the ice bath. The full list, with its sources, is in our guide to ice bath benefits.

Before you go in

Three signs beside the ice bath, in the venue's own words.

  1. Ice plunge limit: 10 minutes

Short rounds are safer, and they leave room for the next guest.

  2. Please shower before the ice plunge

It washes off sweat and sunscreen and keeps the cold water clean for everyone.

  3. Close the ice-box lid properly

The lid keeps the ice from melting between rounds.

Ice bath questions

Is there a time limit in the ice bath?

Yes. The house limit is 10 minutes per round, as the sign beside the tub says. Most people get out well before that. For how long and how cold makes sense, see our guide to ice bath benefits.

Do I need to shower before the ice bath?

Yes. A sign asks every guest to shower before using the ice plunge. It washes off sweat and sunscreen and keeps the water clean for the next person.

Can I use the ice bath after training in the gym?

Yes, the gym is on the same site. If building strength or muscle is your goal, note that a 2015 study in the Journal of Physiology found regular cold-water baths straight after strength sessions reduced long-term gains, so some lifters wait a few hours or keep the cold for rest days. The equipment list is on the gym page.

Is the ice bath the same as the plunge pools?

No. The ice bath is a lidded tub of water and ice, with a step to climb in and out. The cold plunge pools sit alongside it as another way into the cold. You can use both in one visit, as long as each round stays short.

What should I do if I feel unwell in the cold?

Get out straight away, wrap up in something dry and sit somewhere warm, then tell a member of staff. Shivering that will not stop, numbness, dizziness or chest pain are all signs to stop for the day and get help.
